Shoulder pads are the best thing about playing hockey. Shoulder pads are doing fantastic things to alleviate my middle-income, middle-age, middle class, expanding middle doldrums and crises. Doctors should prescribe these things. This could rival Viagra as the safe alternative to re-establishing machismo.
Although wearing nothing but shoulder pads in bed is probably something that appeals to a fine percentage of us. Did I say us? I meant of some people. Not only would you have to deal with the image but also trying to work that hockey-smell to your advantage may be a difficult task. Yet I digress, two sentences into the article and I’m already off on a tangent. Sit down and buckle up we may be in for a ride.

In the last 5 days two teammates have been sent for stitches on their face. One with a gash on his upper lip and the other with a gash on his nose. Both came out of it thread-free. Apparently Krazy Glue has a new use.
Actually Krazy Glue or super glue was used by trauma surgeons in Vietnam to glue lacerated livers back together. It seems that livers are unstitchable. Who knew?
So it seems that super glue has come full circle. First used as a surgical bond, then sold in K-Mart to suspend guys in hardhats from iron beams (remember those commercials?), and now used in the medical field once again to heal wounds. However, if you’re thinking that Krazy Glue may be an item to throw into your first-aid kit, you may want to reconsider.

Pierre Turgeon, Center for the Colorado Avalanche, is expected to end his 19-season NHL career by announcing his retirement Wednesday. After only 17 games last season, because of groin and calf injuries, with
Colorado, Pierre had 4 goals and 3 assists. At 38-years-old, Pierre would be a stellar addition to any 30+ divisional team.
The top overall draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres in 1987, he went on to score 515 goals and 1,327 points in 1,294 career games with the Sabres, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars and Colorado.
He won the Lady Byng Trophy in 1993 with the Islanders after posting career highs of 58 goals and 132 points.
With numbers like that, Pierre would actually be a stellar addition to any 18+ team. BeerLeagueHockey.com is attempting to contact his agent to assess Pierre’s availability and to see if he is willing to play below Div 1, WAY below Div 1, and paying full price at $600/year in a beer league.

A flurry of new research and sports medicine has sprung because of those of us in the Autumn of our lives. Enough of the poetic attempts to journalism, here’s the straight goods: The greater number of older (not old,”oldER”) athletes on the scene today are pushing a new industry of how to treat injuries of the not so youthful. If you are still treating sprains and pains like your bantam hockey coach once taught you: forget about it. In fact don’t wait until you get hurt, try preventing it from ever happening.

I came across an article on a really great hockey web site the other day, beerleaguehockey.com (shameless plug) which described the average cost for a player to suit themselves up. Being a new goalie I have often wondered how much a players equipment cost compared to the goaltending gear I have purchased. According to the article, the average gear setup will run about $750, or, $550 for you less than 5% alcohol by volume drinkers directly to the south of me.
I should also mention that the small article following is full of personal and corporate plugs; I do this not in hope of financial gain but as my way of thanking those who in varied ways, introduced and took me down the path of beer league goaltending. The jury is still out as to whether I should be thanking or hunting them down. What I mean will become painfully obvious as you read on…

Downloading unpaid-for music sparks a big debate in the music industry. Is it legal or illegal? Is it moral? Does the fact that the Canadian Government charges a levy on blank CD’s and DVD’s justify the downloads? Does the easier access promote smaller bands and ultimately launch their careers?
Well if you have two factions in the Canadian music industry debating this hot topic, how do you settle it? With a Road Hockey Rumble, of course.

Sun bathing, mountain biking, hiking, swimming, roller blading, gardening and ice hockey. Which of these things does not belong? Well for me it’s roller blading because my corrdination an’t handle the transition from roller blades to blades of steel. And I’ll choose ice skates any day of the year, including summer.
For many people summer ice hockey is a regular activity, like those in the Falmouth Adult Hockey League.
In the Cape Cod Times, staff writer Rob Duca, interviews the commissioner of the league and some of the players to find out why they play this winter sport during the lazy dog days of summer.

With only a couple of weeks between now and the start of the season, do you really think starting a jogginf routine and eating properly is going to help? Forget about it, take the easy way out an pop some pills instead. (Tongue planted firmly in cheek)
Recently, I was curious what my 5 or 6 cups of coffee per day was doing to my system, and specifically how it might affect my on-ice performance, either positively or negatively. So I started my online research and stumbled across a site that sells supplements targeted directly at hockey players. In fact they have about 12 different supplements aimed at the hockey player. At a price range of between $5 and $15.00 per bottle these products are not aimed at the professionals. These products are aimed at you and me.
