The Vancouver Canucks are set to introduce a “new” team logo on August 29th. All signs online point to this simply being a refresh of the current logo, by removing the red and using more white. This version of the purported new logo is all over the place online, but I got it here:

There are others online as well, such as what appears to be a graphic design proof, found on the official Canucks forum, of all places:

And finally, there is this leaked photo of what appears to be the new fitted-style NHL jersey. A friend emailed this to me, and I haven’t yet been able to find it online. Based on other information about the “new” logo, this seems pretty reasonable:

At the end of the day, if the Canucks make a big deal about releasing a new logo, and it’s simply a refresh of the tired corporate Orca Bay logo they will have missed a huge opportunity and done nothing but made an obvious cash grab. Clearly a huge majority of fans really want the Canucks to go back to their original hockey rink and stick logo, based on the fact that you see more of those jerseys in the stands at a Canucks game than you do of their current jersey.
But maybe that’s the problem. The Canucks probably wouldn’t sell a huge amount more of the classic logo jerseys if they switched to it full-time. Most people who want one have one. But if they switch the colours up on their current logo, it forces fans to buy yet another iteration of the jersey to stay current.
I have to say that I hate the current Canucks colours, so if these rumours end up being true the Canucks are switching to a much better colour palate. But sticking with the corporate logo would sure be disappointing.
